PEOPLE V. RICHARD NAMEY

Namey, a jealous ex-boyfriend could not accept the fact that Sarah Rodriguez (victim #1) had broken off their relationship. Namey started stalking Rodriguez, which prompted Rodriguez to obtain a restraining order, but the restraining order did little to stop Namey from coming after Rodriguez.

On April 16, 2003, Namey waited for Rodriguez close to her home to confront her. He had previously claimed he was going to commit suicide if Rodriguez didn’t take him back. Rodriguez was on her way back from getting food at McDonald’s with her boyfriend, Matthew Corbett (victim #2), when Namey cut her off with his car and blocked her path.  Namey exited his vehicle and walked up to the passenger side, shot Corbett three times, then walked around the victim’s car and shot her once in the head.  Rodriguez was killed.   Corbett survived with major injuries, and is paralyzed from the chest down. Namey fled and was caught three days later after a high speed chase in a carjacked van.

During his jury trial, the defendant testified on his own behalf but was unable to con vince the jury that he acted in “heat of passion” when he saw his ex-girlfriend with another man in her car.

Namey was sentenced to 52 years to life in state prison.
